The Ghosting Game: A Recruiter's Perspective

I recently received a message from a candidate who was frustrated that I hadn’t replied to him. I apologised - because sometimes, despite my best efforts, things slip through the net. It’s never intentional, but it did get me thinking about ghosting and how recruiters often bear the brunt of criticism for it.

Let me share a little from my side. As an independent recruiter, I’m not part of a big corporate machine. There’s no salary being paid to me unless I earn it.

Every aspect of my business - from finding roles to finding talent, reaching out to new clients, and running the admin - falls to me. And honestly? 'Ghosting' is part of my every day.

Candidates don’t reply after headhunts, and new business messages can often go unanswered. It’s not personal; it’s just the reality of a busy world where everyone has their own priorities. It can be frustrating, but I don’t send angry messages or take it personally (or at least try!)

Recruitment is challenging for everyone (and I appreciate really hard when you are unemployed and looking for a role) whether you’re looking for your next role or trying to hire the perfect candidate. A little patience and kindness can go a long way on all sides. I want to help as many people as I can but sometimes time doesn't allow.

For my part, I’ll always aim to respond and keep the lines of communication open. If I ever miss something, it’s not out of disrespect, it’s human error in a fast-paced world.
